As the episode opens we are told we are in in Gills Rock, Wisconsin, and the day is October 28, 1985. A white car goes down the road, and we see a sign reading 'Thorpe's Academy.'

It switches to outside the school, where a little girl (Gwen Raiden) has obviously just gotten out of the car. She looks sad but calm. Her parents (Mr. and Mrs. Raiden) stand behind her. She is completely covered except for her face, in a red parka and mittens. A blonde woman (Lydia Thorpe) with a cultured accent stands outside the school, greeting the girl's parents with a smile.

Lydia Thorpe: Mr. and Mrs. Raiden, welcome to the Academy. I am Lydia Thorpe.

Mrs. Raiden: We can't thank you enough. After all we've been through . . .

Lydia Thorpe: Honestly, I should be thanking you. Your gift to the school was quite generous. We've already invested a portion of it into the accomidations for Gwen's . . . special needs.

Mr. Raiden: When should we come back?

Lydia Thorpe: Classes end June 3rd.

Mr. and Mrs. Raiden exchange looks.

Mr. Raiden: Well, here you go, Gwen. You're finally going to school. Exciting, isn't it?

Mrs. Raiden: You be a good girl, now. You hear me? (looks sad) Be good. And remember we love you.

Mr. Raiden: (to Lydia) Thanks again. We'll see you in June.

Lydia Thorpe nods.

Mr. Raiden: (to Gwen) June, all right?

Gwen bites her lip and begins to walk towards Lydia Thorpe.

Lydia Thorpe: Hello, Gwen, I'm Miss Thorpe. I'm going to take you up to class now. You must stay away from the other children, of course. But I am confident you'll learn my other rules very quickly.

She guestures for Gwen to follow her, and they walk towards the school. Gwen turns around, to face her parents, who exchange sad looks once again and get back in their car. Gwen turns back around and begins to follow Lydia Thorpe once again. She moves to hold Lydia's hand (remember, she is gloved) but Lydia snatches her hand away.

Lydia Thorpe: No, Gwen.

And the two continue to walk towards the school. The scene dissolves to later that day, on the playground. Let's assume it's recess. Kids play games and run about like kids do. The camera pulls back to reveal Gwen sitting alone under a tree, still bundled up in her red winter gear. She is attempting to eat, but the mittens are giving her a rough time, so she takes one off.

Another kid, a little boy, is running about making car sounds. He spots Gwen and stops for a moment, before running up to her, making the sounds again.

Kid: Are you a freak?

Gwen: I don't know.

Kid: I guess you don't look like one.

Gwen: Thanks.

The bell rings, and the camera shifts to Lydia Thorpe.

Lydia Thorpe: Okay, kids. Inside. Inside now.

Gwen stands up, and the boy holds a little matchbox car out in his hand to her.

Kid: You can hold on to this. If you want.

Gwen goes to take it, but Lydia Thorpe spots them from across the playground and gasps. Just as Gwen is about to take it, she shouts:

Lydia Thorpe: Gwen!

And zap - electricity pours out of Gwen's fingertips and into the boy's hand, zapping him back several yards.

Lydia Thorpe: (horrified) No!

A shot of the smoking, burnt matchbox car on the ground, and Gwen backing away a bit. Lydia Thorpe runs towards the scene, kneeling down beside the boy. A bunch of kids run towards it to. Gwen stands back against the tree watching.

There's another shot of the smoking toy car. If Gwen could do that to something made out of metal, what did she do to the boy? That seems to be the question this is posing.

In the next scene, Fred, Gunn and Angel are at Cordelia's old apartment. We learn that for the first coulple months Fred and Gunn paid the rent, but money got tight and they could no longer afford to pay the rent for an apartment no one was living in. We also learn that they have tried to contact Lorne, but have had minimal success. Gunn attempts to unhook Cordelia's stereo system, shocking himself in the process. They show Angel a box of stuff that was on Cordelia's table the night she - and Angel - disappeared, telling him it didn't mean much to them, but he might see something. He looks through it, but doesn't seem to get any hints from it. He asks if they have contacted the police, and they tell him that they have, but have also had no luck with that. Dennis makes some noise and Fred exclaims, "Dammit, Dennis! She's not coming back!" She realizes what she's said, and tries to apologize. Angel tells her it's okay, but there is now a very uncomfortable vibe in the room. "It's just . . ." Fred says, " . . . you count on stuff, you know? Things being where you left them. What happens if you get back and they're not there?" Angel looks down at a picture of him, Cordy and Wes. "You go find them."

____

And we flash to Wesley and his demon fighting team battling some demon in the sewer. Angel stands at the sidelines, asking Wesley if he needs help. Wesley beheads the demon quickly, and says "No. Thanks." Angel thanks Wesley for finding him, and bringing him up out of the ocean. He tells him that he had a lot of time to think, and that they're okay again. Wesley doesn't seem to believe him. Instead, he hands him a folder containing everything he has on Cordelia's disappearance, telling Angel that's what he really came for. He goes on to tell him about a dark demi-goddess of the lost that only dead people can enter the presence of, that could tell Angel where to look for Cordelia. "Just beware," Wesley says, "Denza isn't remotely trustworthy." To which Angel asks, as Wesley walks away, "What should I do then? Send her a gift? A sacrifice? Unholy fruit basket?"

____

We flash to Angel approaching Denza's lair. There's some quipping from the demon. And finally they talk about relevant things. Denza says "She's far from you, chamion, and needs you no longer." Angel replies, "I need her." Aww. Denza goes on to tell him that "The Axis of Pythia is close-by. What you seek can only be found inside the axis." She tells him that the axis is 'an ancient power bridging all dimensions.'

____

It flashes to a white limo parked outside of a bar. Gwen travels in style, of course. Who would expect anything else? Then inside the bar, where a rat-looking man (Elliot) sits at a table, seeming as if he's been waiting for a while. Switches to a red-leather-clad woman strutting her stuff into the bar. This is, of course, Gwen. Elliot shakes his head in disbelief. She straightens her gloves and stits down across from Elliot.

Elliot: I thought I said 'discreet.'

Gwen looks down.

Gwen: What? You see nipple?

Elliot looks at his watch.

Elliot: You're late.

Gwen leans across the table.

Gwen: You're screwing me. The Axis of Pythia is worth 33 million dollars, and you told me it was worth six.

Elliot: The axis is merely a mystical object, it has no inherent monetary value.

Gwen rolls her eyes.

Gwen: Blah, blah, polysyllabic blah. I need a drink.

Gwen turns to the waiter.

Gwen: Waiter? I'll take a redcoat, up, double the voddy. And, uh, can I get one of those little swizzly things? (turns back to Elliot) I just love those. You were saying?

Elliot: My appraiser priced the axis at exactly -

Gwen: At eighteen-percent of its true market value. And seeing as I steal stuff on commission, that's like getting me for eighty-percent off. Now let's be honest, Elliot -

Gwen reaches for his hand, but he gasps, pulling his hand back.

Gwen: Do I look like a bluelight special to you?

Elliot: The street value is irrelevant. I only want the axis for my own private collection. Now, as I recall, we'd already settled on a rather substantial fee.

Gwen: Say it with me big guy, cuh-mih-shun.

Elliot places a folder on the table.

Gwen: This my stuff?

Gwen slides the folder towards herself and flips throught it.

Gwen: Auction house perimeter, security system, vent work, vaults . . .

Elliot: Make the delivery to a private high rise downtown. I'll be waiting in the penthouse. And then we'll transfer the balance of your fee.

Gwen: We both know it's gonna have a lot more zeros on the end of it.

Elliot: You know, Gwen, you came to me very highly recommended for your, uh . . .

The waiter sits down Gwen's drink.

Elliot: . . . for your talents. But I have to admit I was expecting someone a bit more - professional.

Gwen laughs slightly and goes to get up.

Gwen: I am a professional. And we professionals don't like taking the bone.

Gwen holds up Elliot's watch. Elliot reaches for it, expecting she's going to give it back.

Elliot: Gwen, that is a twelve-thousand-dollar watch.

Gwen smiles as she closes her hand around it and zaps it in a little explosion of blue sparks. Elliot sighs and rolls his eyes. She drops the smoking watch onto the table.

Gwen: Now it's surrealism.

Gwen takes her precious swizzle stick out of her drink and sticks it in her mouth as she turns.

Gwen: Thanks for the drink.

Elliot seems exasperated. Tthe camera follows Gwen as she walks out of the bar.

Camera flashes to Cordy on her higher plane, and zooms in through her eye to Fred explaining the Axis of Pythia in the Hyperion. There's some cute Fred/Gunn and Fred/Angel interaction but here's what you really need to know: the axis was forged from the tripod of the Delphic oracle, is a metal arc set onto a marble base, stands about two feet high and weighs eighteen pounds. It was said to be imbued with many mystcal qualities, such as finding souls or entities across dimensions. It is currently being held in a vault at Chandler's Auction House, an establishment firmly rooted in the black market. "Black market means money, money means security." The following security devices are in place at Chandler's Auction House: surveillance cameras, electric gates, laser sensors, handprint recognition, and armed gaurds. Fred says she's working on a plan, but so far it involves being sent to prison and 'becoming somebody's bitch.' I love Fred. Anyway, Angel assures her he's good at this. As Fred gathers up the information to go work on her plan, Angel says "I'm really strong, if that helps." I love Angel. Gunn says "That's my girl, large and in-charge. Okay, teensy-weensy and in-charge." I love Gunn. *basks in love and the remembers she's supposed to be transcribing stuff* Right, so as Angel describes what they'll need for what Gunn has so optimistically called 'Operation Chance-in-Hell' there's flashes to Gwen getting ready, and then back to Angel talking. This is transcribed, as it involves Gwen.

Angel: Probably some repelling hooks.

Gwen packs some repelling hooks.

Angel: Flashlights, obviously.

Gwen tests out a flashlight before placing it in a holster on her arm.

Angel: Aerosols. What else?

Gwen hooks a rope to her body harness, zips up a small case of locksmith tools, puts a very shiny dagger into her boot, and slides her shoulder bag on. A very blonde man (who is, of note, a lot shorter than Gwen) holds a silver tray out to her, on which a small metal cylinder sits. Gwen takes the cylinder.

Gwen: Thanks, Nick.

Gwen walks over to a laptop computer and presses a button, transforming the monitor into a mirror. Gwen opens the cylinder, and it's simply a lipstick tube. She puts some lipstick on and smiles at her own reflection before leaving.

____

Flash to Wesley throwing Lilah against the wall. Lilah tells him she can't stay, Wes asks her who said she could. Wes kisses her neck as she explains that she has a meeting. Lilah pushes Wesley onto a table, sending things clattering to the floor. There's some typical Weslah convo as Lilah unbuttons his shirt. Lilah bites Wesley's ear and Wes twists her so that Lilah is on the table with him on top. More Weslah convo, before they fall onto the floor, with Lilah on top. Lilah says (oh and this is a classic) "As soon as he dried off, Angel kicked Connor out of the hotel. Poor little guy. Friendless. Homeless. Looks like Connor's gonna need someone who cares. Like a big sister. Or hey! Mrs. Robinson, if that's what he's into." Gotta love Lilah. So Wes flips them around, so now he's on top. "Shut up, Lilah." "Make me." And Lilah gently pushes Wesley's head down her body. One of my favorite scenes ever. *cough*

____

Switches to Gwen climbing over a wall outside of what is quite obviously Chandler's Auction House. She walks over to an electric box and picks the lock on it. She pulls out a couple wires and partly strips the insulation on them. She pulls off her right glove and grabs the wires, zapping them. Camera shows us as the security cameras short out. Gwen closes the electric box and walks over to a metal door. The puts her hand over the red light right above the lock and it turns green as the door opens. Gwen enters the building.

Camera pans over to Angel and the gang climbing over the same wall Gwen just did. Angel runs over and tears the cover off of the electric box and rips some of the wires. The lights go out. Fred uses some device to make the light on the door turn green and let them in. They go in. Fred gathers up her plans and directs the men on where to go.

Gwen sits up in one of the ducts and sees Fred.

Gwen: Yeah, that's not good.

Somewhere else in the building, Gunn punches out some security guards. Elsewhere, Angel finds the vault the axis is held in. He sprays a can of aerosol into the air in front of him, and a network of green light beams becomes visible.

Angel: Help me out here, Fred.

Suddenly a barred security gate drops down in front of Angel.

Angel: Not exactly what I had in mind.

Angel tries to lift the gate, but suddenly, inside the vault, Gwen's head pops out from the ceiling.

Gwen: You know, I put that down for a reason.

Angel stares at her.

Elsewhere, Fred is working on the computers, when a message pops up onto her screen saying: "Vault Electrical Monitor. System interference. Malfunction."

Gunn drags the gaurd he knocked out, only to find four more gaurds already knocked out in the closet. "We got company."

Back to Angel and Gwen.

Angel: Who are you?

Gwen: Who are you?

Angel: I asked you first.

Gwen: What, are you seven?

Angel: Tell me you're not here for the axis.

Gwen: I'm not here for the axis.

Angel: You're lying.

Gwen: I'm fibbing. That's lying, only classier.

Gwen lowers one of her hands in between some of the light beams, and they begin to arc up. She then drops down into the clear space, landing on her feet, of course.

Angel: (stunned) What?

Gwen: Technically? I'm exciting the subatomic particles of electrical energy and then bouncing them off of each other before they hit ground state. I just love that folks go for this 'high tech' stuff. Electricity comforts them. Suckers.

Angel: What - are you?

Gwen: I'm a freak.

Gwen holds her hand over the palm recognition scanner.

Gwen: What'd you think?

Angel: Yeah, uh - I'm sure there's a lot of other nice, expensive things that you could steal in there. It just - it doesn't have to be the one.

Angel tries to lift the gate again. Gunn comes up beside him.

Gunn: Where's the bogey?

Angel: Inside. She's after the axis.

Gunn: (taken aback) She? As in, she took out the four armed gaurds downstairs?

Angel: That's good to know.

Gwen begins to leave.

Gwen: So long, handsome.

Angel: Listen, I need the axis. See, it's an ancient mystical relic -

Gwen: - that's fun for a girl and a boy. I like to think of it as . . . mine.

Angel: Please?

Gwen: Please? Are you kidding me?

Angel looks over to Gunn, and Gwen notices Gunn for the first time. Her eyes light up, a flirty smile on her face.

Gwen: Hey there, Denzel.

Angel: I'm trying to find someone. Someone very important to me, and the axis there, it's my only shot.

Gunn: Come on, he's telling the truth.

Gwen rolls her eyes.

Gwen: Oh, golly, if you say it's true! So what? You just wanna - borrow this thing?

Angel: You can do whatever you want with it as soon as I find her.

Gwen: Her. Of course it's her.

Gwen walks over to Angel and Gunn.

Gwen: Two questions then. One - do you really love her?

Angel: Yeah. I do.

Gwen: Two - on a scale of one to ten, exactly how stupid do you think I am?

An alarm starts to go off, and the lights begin to flash, the gate rising slowly..

Gwen: Don't answer that!

Gwen runs, trying to get back up her rope..

Angel: Way to go, Fred.

Angel tries to force the gate up faster, and Gunn rolls under it. Gunn lunges for Gwen, and wraps his arms around her legs.

Gwen: Let go!

Gunn: A little help here!

Gwen places her hand to his chest and sends and electrical charge into his body. He screams and Angel tackles Gwen, breaking her hold on Gunn. Gunn drops to the floor and Fred comes running in. Angel feels for Gunn's pulse.

Angel: He's dead.

Here's where a commercial break is, but it pretty much runs smooth without one. Fred runs over to Gunn.

Fred: No! No! No!

Gwen looks at Gunn lying on the floor and flashes back to the little boy on the playground at the academy.

Gwen: Move!

Gwen pushes Angel out of the way with an electrical charge and then kicks Fred in the face to move her away.

Gwen: Sorry, honey.

Gwen places her hand on Gunn's chest, a few sparks coming out. She shakes her hand and places it back down, and there's a couple more attempts at sending an electrical charge into him.

Gwen: Just like starting a Chevy.

One more electrical charge and Gunn's eyes open as he sucks in his breath.

Gwen: There we go!

Angel pulls Gwen off of Gunn and Fred runs back to Gunn. Gwen kicks Angel in the head.

Fred: Angel! We got to get to a hospital!

Angel looks at Gwen. Finally he runs to pick Gunn up.

Later, Connor is walking alone on a dark road. Lilah is standing on a bridge, watching Connor through a pair of binoculars. A portion of this scene is transcribed, because they do talk about Gwen, and things relevant to Gwen. Angel comes up behind Lilah, and the two talk about Connor. "Let him off pretty easy, didn't you?" "Kid messed up. He knows that."

Lilah: Let me guess. You're just gonna birddog the kid until he gets weepy and pulls a prodigal?

Angel: I'm not here for him, Lilah. I'm here for you. Earlier tonight the Axis of Pythia was stolen from Chandler's Auction House.

Lilah: Black market. Up-scale.

Angel: Theif was too. What you might call specialized. The kind only people like your clients can afford.

Lilah: And you want the name of the buyer. Look Angel, I know you've been out of the loop for a while, but I'm still evil. I don't do errands unless they're . . . evil . . . errands.

Angel: I think you'll run this one.

Lilah: Why? What's in it for me?

Angel: Just this once, I'll ignore the fact that you were within fifty yards of my son. Just this once.

Angel starts to walk away but turns around when Lilah starts to speak.

Lilah: So much for moral high-ground, huh? It's interesting. You coming to me for help.

Angel: You know what I find interesting? The fact that I can smell you and Wesley all over each other. Start making calls. You got an hour.

Angel walks away.

____

Gunn is lying on a bed in Fred's room, looking at a print-out of his heart monitor tape. "Kind of looks like art, doesn't it? I call it 'takes more than that to kill me, punk!' The 'punk' is what makes it art." Fred comes in and asks him what it was like being dead. "See anything interesting? White light? Shirley McLain?" Gunn tells her he doesn't remember. Fred goes on to throw a minor fit about being sick of holding everything up around there. Gunn says "You know what, just electrocute me now, becaue I don't know what kind of alien female thing - " Gunn tells her that no one forced all of this responsibility on her, and she says "Well who else was going to do it? Who else was going to hold everything up after you left me all alone? You died and left me all alone!" Fred begins to cry, and Gunn gets up and hugs her. Aww *cries* That scene always makes me cry. So anyway . . .

____

Gwen walks into Elliot's private high rise, carrying a bag, presumably containing the axis. Gwen presses the button on the elevator. There's little mirror insets on the doors, and Gwen takes the opportunity to check her lipstick.

Angel: Nice color.

Gwen spins around to see Angel standing there, and then looks back at the mirror, which of course doesn't show Angel's reflection.

Gwen: Okay, after I kick your ass, I'm gonna ask about that.

Gwen tries to hit him the head with her bag, but he ducks. She kicks him and throws the bag into the elevator. Apparently the axis isn't very fragile.

Angel: I don't want to hurt you.

Gwen: That's what they all say.

The two fight in a rather nifty fight scene where they seem pretty evenly matched, which is funny - because Gwen's much smaller than Angel, who has superstrength. Huh.

Gwen: I don't usually enjoy the hand-to-hand this much.

Angel: Maybe you haven't been doing it right.

More fighting. Gwen throws Angel against a wall. But not in the Weslah sense of being thrown against a wall.

Gwen: Why are you not toast?

Angel reverses it so he has her pinned against the wall. No, really, this isn't like the Weslah scene.

Angel: I'm not even warmed up.

Gwen: Oh really?

Gwen punches Angel and he falls to the floor. As he gets up, Gwen removes one of her gloves.

Gwen: I can fix that.

Gwen attempts to shock him, but Angel dodges her and knocks her into the elevator - well half in, half out. Angel goes over to her, and she kicks him, sending him into the elevator. She jumps up and climbs on top of him, ripping his shirt open. She places both hands on his chest, trying to shock him.

Gwen: Warm enough?

Sparks shoot into his chest. The camera zooms on his chest, and then actually inside his chest, where the electricity is stimulating his heart and it's actually beating. Angel sits up, and begins to kiss Gwen passionately. A set of bars slide across the exit of the elevator, and the two finally separate.

Gwen: You're alive.

Angel: You felt that? My heart -

Gwen: It was beating. It doesn't, does it?

Angel: Cordelia. (panicks) I gotta get out of here.

Gwen: What the hell is going on?

Elliot steps into the frame, behind the bars that trap them in.

Elliot: Well that should be obvious . . . to a professional like yourself.

Angel: It's a double-cross.

Gwen: (turns to Angel) I'm not slow, I know it's - shut up. (back to Elliot) Is he one of yours?

Elliot: No. I thought he was yours. What with the - tonguing.

Gwen: In his dreams.

Angel: Not even close.

Elliot: Doesn't matter.

Gwen: Job's done. Elliot, you don't have to do this.

Elliot: I have no choice. The job you did for me was a train-wreck. The noise, the publicity, that little stunt you pulled in the bar.

Gwen: It was just a joke.

Elliot: Professionals are discreet, young lady. You, on the other hand, are a freak. A dangerous freak. Which is why I had them remodel the elevator you're standing in. More of a retrofit, really. Low-teched the whole thing with six inches of plexi-glass separating you from any available current.

Gwen slams her hands down on the bars.

Elliot: Tempered lucite.

Angel: He's going to seal us in, turn on the gas.

Gwen looks at Elliot with disgust.

Gwen: What are you, Lex Luthor?

Elliot: What do you think? I'm gonna stand here and duke it out with the electrogirl? Now don't worry. I'm told the gas is very fast-acting. You'll be dead within -

Elliot looks at his watchless wrist.

Elliot: Whoops. Where does the time go?

There's an audible hiss as the gas begins to filter into the elevator. The doors slide shut before Angel can stop them.

Angel: Okay, there's gotta be something.

Angel begins to feel on the walls.

Angel: Get down! Now! Get low!

Angel pushes her onto the floor.

Gwen: Ow, you jackass! You get low.

Angel: I don't need to. I don't breathe.

Gwen: Gee, must be a real turn-on for the girlfriend.

Angel: Utility panel. Right about here. You think?

Angel taps a place on the wall.

Gwen: Plastic's too thick, you lunkhead. I can't get through to blow the charge.

Angel: Simple question! Is it here or not?

Gwen: Yes, it's there.

Angel tries to punch through the plastic as Gwen begins to cough. Outside the elevator, Elliot is talking a cell phone.

Elliot: We should be finished here anytime now. Uh huh. I see. Uh huh. We had the tuna casserole last Thursday morning.

Back in the elevator, Angel continues to pound on the plastic, making some progress. Gwen continues to cough.

Gwen: If I die . . .

Angel: You're not gonna die.

Gwen: Last kiss?

Angel finally punches a clear hole through the plastic.

Angel: Hey!

Gwen holds her hand up and Angel latches onto it with one of his own hands, his other hand on the utility box. The doors slide open and Angel carries Gwen out, placing her on the floor.

Elliot: (to his security people) Get rid of him.

Angel quickly takes care of the security people, after a brief fight. Gwen gets up and starts to approach Elliot.

Gwen: I expect to get screwed. Professional theif. Hazard of the biz.

Elliot: Just wait a second -

Gwen: What I don't appreciate, Elliot, is being called a freak. That's my word, and I get cranky when people like you use it.

Elliot looks scared.

Elliot: Gwen, think about this.

Gwen: You ever been struck by lightening, Elliot? I've been struck by lightening fourteen times. It's not my fault, I just attract it. You know what also atrracts lightening? Maggoty little norms like you.

Gwen holds out her hand, about to shock him but stops when Angel speaks.

Angel: So you're a freak. Boo hoo. So what?

Gwen: Excuse me?

Angel: I think you've already figured out I'm not the posterboy for normal. Sometimes, you gotta let go . . .

Angel, without even looking at Elliot, punches him in the face, knocking him out.

Gwen: Hey! I wanted to do that!

Angel: You were gonna fry him!

Gwen: I was not!

Angel: Don't fib.

Gwen: Fine. Did you at least break his nose?

Gwen goes to touch Elliot, but Angel catches her hand.

Gwen: You're really gonna use that axis thing to find her, aren't you?

Angel just looks at her.

Gwen: Figures. Anyone that bad at stealing stuff has got to be doing it for love. (looks down) Bummer.

Gwen walks past Angel and out the door.

____

Back at the Hyperion, Fred and Gunn wait outside a room, a bright golden light filtering under the door. Angel comes out of the room. He walks right past them, looking a little stunned. Angel tells them that "there was all this light around her, and the light seemed to be made up of pure joy, and warmth." He goes on to say, "All those months under the water, I kept thinking to myself 'I got to get home to Cordelia.' I get back and I find out that she's gone. I keep thinking 'I got to get Cordy back home.' Finally I find her and I realize - she already is home. Where she belongs."

Up on Cordelia's higher level plane thingy, she's glowing like higher beings tend to do. "What are you? Deficient? Get me out of here!"
